Comments are now closed.. the winner will be picked in a bit..
The answer comes from Wikiedia.org
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pochahontas
Historical records do not suggest that Smith and Pocahontas were lovers. The romance is featured only (but repeatedly) in fictional versions of their relationship (such as the 1995 animated film by Walt Disney). The first romance was written about them in the early 1800s, suggesting the story’s mythic appeal. Accounts of such a romance have been repeated in films made in the United States as late as 2009.
The answer is no they were never lovers. She worked with him, saved his life but when on to marry a different Englishman named John Rolfe.
The winner is EvilAngel6! She gave the best all around answer! I have emailed her already and she will like the ladies set from the Infamous Lovers Collection. So that left me with a set of nail polish to giveaway still.. The men’s side of the Infamous Lovers. Check post for 8/31/10 to see what I decided to do..

Technorati rocks!

I’m not sure that they were actual lovers. It was probably more love and mutual respect from a distance. Maybe they had they’re moments when romance was in the air but I dont think they went further than that. The world around them kept them apart really, as well as circumstances.
Good answer! I won’t tell anyone the answer for sure because I want you all to give it to me. I will let everyone know the correct answer to my question tomorrow afternoon.
I do not believe they were actual lovers, I feel their “love” was more like an “unrequited” love story..I equate it to a high school crush with looks of looks and smiles but no real physical connection.
I’m in the USA
Hey there Jackie! Thanks for stopping by! I think this was a fun way to see how well we all know our history.. Check back tomorrow for the answer!
I think that the John Smith and Pocahontas story is more of a legend that has grown over the years and been exaggerated than actual truth! Well, that’s the way of legends, isn’t it Kim? Haha. But really, I don’t think there was ever actual proof of a romantic encounter between the two!
Thanks for your thoughts on this Nicole!!
I think they were definitely lovers. If the whole thing went at all like I have read then I don’t think there was any way for all that passion to have gone to waste.
All the tension amongst their people and the circumstances probably drew them even closer together as it happens when people are kept apart, instead they are drawn to each other more..
Thanks for stopping by ladies at Smash Bravo team!
I honestly don’t think they were actually lovers. Maybe they were in love but I don’t think they were in a position to act on these feelings. In those days it was unthinkable. I think they dreamed about a relationship but never actually had a chance to act on it, maybe they didn’t even meet eachother.
Thanks for stopping by! The answers everyone is giving are great!
I agree with Nicole that it was more of a legend that grew over time!
Awesome collections btw! I would love to win!
Thanks!! I can’t wait to giveaway a set either.. Good Luck!!
i think YES
haha cuz i like to think sordid hawt romance is more likely than not, no matter what the obstacles are
i’m in the US <3 love ya kimmy!
Thanks Kellie!! Stop by tomorrow to see who win!
No Pocahontas(her nickname) and John Smith did not have an affair nor were they “in Love”.
The disney movie is total fiction.
Matoaka and John Smith were friends with an Uncle type role played to Matoaka’s curiosity about white men and their customs. He taught her about white men’s politics and how to speak, read and write english.
Matoaka actualy fell in love with John Rolf and after converting to christianity and being Baptised she and Rolfe were married I believe around 1613 or 1614.
I could keep going but I don’t want to put anyone to sleep.
Wow thanks for that piece of history!!
I do not think that Pocahontas and John Smith were actualy lovers. I remember reading somewhere that the story was fiction and simply exaggerated over time. It was a great Disney movie, though! :p
Its been so much fun reading everyone’s comments!!
I think Pocahontas & John never were lovers. No. Because I think she ended up marrying another english man.
USA
I would like to think that there was love involved, but somehow I am not so sure
Especially when she was taken back to England, poor thing!
oh, i forgot! girls this time!
I’m just gonna comment here and say EvilAngel takes the prize…and I hope she’ll continue the history lesson!
I don´t think they where lovers, they probably felt respect for each other but I really don’t think they where lovers. There where such tension between the two groups and if you consider how the world was then I think this kept them a part.
Love the collection, especially the girls! I international by the way.
Awesome! Thanks for stopping by!
My belief is the story has grown longer down the line. If John Smith had a young girl as a guide, and, knowing how the west was ‘won’, I bet he ‘won’ her.
My understanding is that no they weren’t lovers. She was too young at first and I think it was more that they both respected and maybe even liked each other. Lovers I think is a fictional account. I dont know much more about it.
I am international and would love to win the girls’ set.
Wow thanks for stopping by! Be sure to check back tomorrow to see who is the lucky one!
They were not lovers, but she did save him from being executed by members of the tribe she belonged to. She helped the Native Americans and Englishmen learn to get along, and because of this earned their respect. She married another Englishman.
Fun contest. Thanks, Kim.
Born in the USA
Thanks for stopping by! I only ask for fun where you might from because I was born in England, yet loved American History while in high school here in the states. Its been really fun to read all the comments left about this pair. This afternoon I will give the answer along with the winner of a set of BB Couture Infamous Lovers guys or ladies..
I do not think they were lovers and I don’t think they pined for each other. I think the “love story” has been developed over the years in a fairy-tale like way, but not based on truth.
USA, but actually Canadian…
I think the story was just a legend. It sounds very romantic but I think it was just love from afar. Don’t you wish we could go back in history and find out for ourselves? Love the new collections. If I win I’d like the ladies collection.
Thanks Lucy for stopping by! Later today I will announce the winner and the answer!
That’s an interesting question and though it would be nice to think that they were lovers I doubt it. Too many differences between them…
Am really curious about hearing the correct answer. =)
I am going to this giveaway go till 5:00 my time and then close comments. I will let everyone know that what is the right answer
I really think Pocahontas and John Smith were lovers because from the way they act towards each other all lovey dovey or just the way they treat each other.
well looks like it’s been pretty much answered but no they were not lovers, she befriended many in the Jamestown Colony as a young girl, married a settler named John and moved to England.
If I’m not too late, I’d like to say that I don’t believe that Pocahontas and John Smith were lovers. I think they were just friends and their supposed love affair was part of fictional accounts of their history.
Canada
Yes
I believe most legends are born out of a kernel of truth so therefore the legend of the their love affair must have some basis in fact.
Thanks Canada for dropping by! I love hearing for others outside of the states.. Stay tuned.. I will be giving the answer soon.. and the winner
Although I love Disney’s Pocahontas, I do feel as if their version of the story was extremely exaggerated.
She was very young when they first met and although it was permissible to marry at a young age, their relationship was built on respect and admiration. Kind of like admiring an established, older individual of merit and confusing like with love.
No they were not lovers. She thought of him more as a father figure. His understanding of events or telling of events or both got a bit distorted over time.
What a cool idea! Maybe more couples will get the idea and have their nails done in complimentary colors.
BB Couture and Overall Beauty are definitely doing a great service by promoting this emerging style for men!
You are such a sweetheart! Your wife is lucky to have you! Thank you for your kind words, I am so glad you stopped by to visit and leave your thoughts..
