NuMe Curling Wand Product Review (Update)

I will be honest the first time I tried to use the Nume 19 Mm (3/4″) Clipless Tourmaline Ceramic Black Curling Iron + free glove As my son would put it a “major failure!” So I just walked away from the curling wand and let it sit for a few days while I was cranky about how I couldn’t make it work for me. I had watched I don’t know like 6 different videos about how to use it on youtube. I let NuMe know what had happen and Mindy send this over in email:Mindy: Oh how to work with my curling wand. I like the hold the wand vertical and wrap my hair around the wand with the glove (prevents burning) on your hand. Hold the hair in place for 30 seconds and release. It did take me a few practice times to get it right. I’ve seen some videos where people will pin the curls until they are cooled down to get a cleaner look.

Now for a little information about the NuMe hair care brand itself:

  • – NuMe is a brand that just recently launched in the US
  • – NuMe was successfully sold in Europe, mainly distributed to professional hair salons
  • – Originated to support stylists and their needs
  • – Engineered and manufactured based on top leading hair stylist recommendations
  • – Pioneered 100% Solid Ceramic Plates, first to implement in Europe

( From what I understand there maybe issues dealing with the company on their website. And it maybe possible that their phone number isn’t working. I would order mine off Amazon because Amazon tends to help customers more than a brand might. )
Now on to my review for their curling wand. I had also received in my package their Thermal Defense and Finishing Serum. Both which I used while I tested out their curling wand. Thermal Defense is used on dry hair to protected it as you use what ever curling item or flat iron. It protects your hair from getting over-heated I guess. The Finishing Serum is like a sticky like serum that goes on your hair before you blow-dry to help cut the time down on your blow drying, and it does work.

So a few nights ago I had nothing to so I decided I was going to try working with curling wand again, Having never used one before, and tried already once I wasn’t too sure if I was going to make it work at all. A friend of mine told me she has one and uses it all the time to curl her daughters hair. She also told me that when she first started using it she burned her hand like 10 times cause she was too macho to use the glove that came with hers. She learn that there is a very good reason to wear the glove.. One came with my curling wand and I use didn’t feel like burning my hand either. I think one of the reasons I was having such a issue was all the videos were done by people who are right-handed so what I needed to do was backwards cause I am a leftie.
(This is going to be fun for the photos before I’m doing before and after photos!! It was just a shame I did on a night I wasn’t going anywhere.. Look at the after photos to see why!)
Here is a photo of my below the shoulder length hair all straight.

Also here is another view of my hair after I pulled part of it up so I could curl the underside first then start on the top: This gives you a good idea of what I was trying to do.

Now my hair is super straight, and never holds a curl without lots of hair spray. So that was one of my questions about using a curling wand versus a curling iron, will my hair keep the curl for longer than about 3 hours without hair spray. (the answer is yes, in fact the next day I still had major curls after sleeping on it, I’m impressed!)
What I did was I curled one inch parts of my hair for a count of ten then held my hair for another count of ten so it cooled off a little but wow did it curl! I found that if I left the curls to completely cool before combing it out with a comb for waves or I used a pick so I could have really curly hair! I felt like Goldilocks when I was done! Photo my hair after working finally getting the hang of it.I’m going to do a little pro and con on the curling wand because it does have a learning curve that goes with it:
Pro: if hold your hair for a count of ten you find that you will get major curls that have a long lasting time frame to them. Even after sleeping on my hair I still have curls the next day.
Con: Learning curve, you are going to want to watch a few videos before even trying it out
Pro: If you got a daughter willing to sit still long enough, you got curls for two days
Con: if you got bad shoulders, can’t lift your arms over your head for a long period of time, curling wand is not for you.
Con: it takes longer than it would if you would be working with a curling iron
Pro: if you need something that will give you major curl for a long period of time, like you are getting married or some other type of special event then a curling wand is great for this.

Would I use the curling wand again? Maybe now that I got the hang of it, I would use it I was going somewhere special and had time to really do my hair right. (I been using i!)
You can get your NuMe Curling Iron
Now on Amazon! Wow I found a lot of them I thought would be really cool to try! They have some that are a bit more affordable over what the cost this one was.
The curling wand price depends on the size, I have the 19mm which is about $200.00 Right was on sale for $175.00 at that time.
Update: It is available on Amazon for 55% off the price! Nume 19 Mm (3/4″) Clipless Tourmaline Ceramic Black Curling Iron + free glove
For those who know how to work with a clipless curling iron now that it has dropped in price now would be time to get one. But only if you know what you are doing. This review was done in 2011. It is now 2014 and I still have mine and using it! Bad Shoulders and all.

Now while I was looking to see if NuMe are still available, I saw a few really good curling wands by store brands we all know as all these are under $30.00 🙂 (so if you are looking for a curling wand and you do not want NuMe here are a few other choices)
Remington CI95AC/2 Tstudio Salon Collection Pearl Digital Ceramic Curling Wand, 1/2 Inch – 1 Inch
And this one:
Conair YOU Waves Ceramic Wand Combo Unit
And even this one:
Revlon Bold Expressions Flipperless Curling Iron Wand
Curling wands are a product that you got to really work with to figure out what is the best way to make it work for you. Be sure you get one with a glove. No need to burn your hands right?

  1. Glad to know that you figured it out! I was interested in buying a curling wand from NuMe and wanted to read some good reviews. I do have one question though, how long did it take to receive your wand from when you ordered it? Thank you!

    • I got mine free for review, so I can’t really tell you how long it will take for you to get yours. Just be sure you use the glove or you will burn your hands. I read a few reviews before I tested it out for the first time, wow it takes a bit of testing it to figure out what works for you. I am left-handed which made it a bit tougher to figure out, but I did. Enjoy..

  2. It’s been a few years since you did this review, I was just wondering if your opinion of these Nume curling wands has changed any. Before I make such an expensive purchase I wanted to make sure this product won’t just break down after a few months. I’m reading a lot about the wands not working after a few months of use. albeit the end result of awesome hair, i don’t want to spend close to $200 if the product is bad and the return policy is worse…

    • To be honest I rarily use mine. So it works only because I do not use it every day like some might. I can’t really give you a better answer than that..

  3. How long did it take them to ship to your house? I ordered mine last Tuesday and it’s still not here ;/ but I live in Toronto, Canada so that might be an issue or may take longer to get shipped…but it shouldn’t take this long should it?

    • When I received I got as a sample to do a review on. I am in the states and I remember it took them about 2 weeks after they asked me if I would be willing to do a review for it. It will probably take a bit longer due to the fact you are in Canada. I would check your recipt and see if there is anyway to contact them.

  4. I got a Nume wand and it DIDN’T WORK and they DIDN’T REFUND so I was really upset 🙁 No more NuMe for me, I was really excited about them because of all the good reviews. I ended up getting a Karmin wand and I guess the whole Nume incident was a blessing in disguise because the karmin is absolutely AMAZING so you should totaly review that one!

    • OH wow I am really sorry that the Nume wand didn’t work for you, that is a totally bummer they wouldn’t refund you either. 🙁 but good news that you did find out that works best for you. I haven’t seen the Karmin yet.. I not really good with wands, I like curling irons much better. Just easier for me to work with having the clip. 😉 Oh well curling irons have really changed since I first using them so many years ago. Thanks so very much for stopping by and telling your story!

  5. I love NUME curling wands. I have the Curl Jam set, the reverse wand and the pearl wand. I always get compliments when I use them. Sadly, I can no longer recommend Nume to anyone. I bought my curl jam set in October. Tuesday when I was using it I noticed it was cooling down. I thought maybe something was wrong with the outlet and plugged my flat iron in to test it. Not my outlet. I contacted NUME yesterday for a replacement. After all, my wand is only three months old and I don’t use it more than twice a week. It’s practically brand new! I didn’t drop it or anything like that so it must be a faulty wand. It says it has a four year warranty. Sadly, I was told that I would have to pay to have it replaced. It will cost me $20, plus I have to ship my old one to them and then pay shipping to send the new one back. o basically because they sent me a faulty product, I have to pay close to $40 total to get it replaced. I feel like this isn’t very honest of NUME considering that I can’t find anywhere on their site where this is stated and even asked the customer service rep where it was written. Not to mention the fact that they sold me an expensive, but flawed product and are asking me to pay for their mistake. Needless to say, I won’t be buying anymore products from NUME. I would love to be able to recommend them to friends and family, but do not feel like I can do this. Please be aware before you purchase a NUME wand that they do not back up their products and will ask you to pay for their mistakes.

    • Thanks Elizabeth for stopping by and telling me about what has happened. They have an amazing product for your hair (I am still using the bottle of Arganices their Argan Oil for hair but it seems they are falling short on their customer care. Nothing bothers me more than bad customer service, there is no need for it! I hope they will do what is right and help you. Thanks again for stopping by and giving your thoughts and warning..

  6. I have read several reviews about how and their owner Rex Kelly is know for unethical business. Its feel cheated and have experienced the same shopping from them too. No point in giving them any business. BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Now I do not know about how Rex Kelly does his job, or anything about his possible unethical business deals. I was send these products to do a review on, I was not paid to do this review either. I leave it up to you the consumer to decide if these products are for you or not. I am not here to tell you that you have to buy these products, I am sure there is probably better curling wands out there, I just give you what I think about it and nothing more.
Thanks for stopping by and saying something though, its good to know that if there is a issue with how Rex Kelly here is at least a warning. Which is why I answering this comment and approving yours.

  7. how do you hold hair to this wand. I burned myself through the glove. I can’t believe I got this and didn’t see there was no clip to hold hair to wand.

    • What I did was take a part of my hair, about a inch worth and started at the base of the wand and started winding my hair around the wand. It has no clip so you hold your hair on the wand for a count of 10 and then unwound my hair from the wand. If you hold onto it for less than a count of ten using the palm of your hand you should not burn your hand. I was wondering how long were your hair? There is no clip and I did find it hard to work with when I first started trying to use it. You wind your hair around the wand like you do as if you were winding your hair around your finger.

  8. This was so helpful! I too have very straight hair, and was wondering if this would work for me. You’ve inspired me (beautiful “after” pictures), and I am ordering one now! 🙂

    • Wow thanks!! I had to work with being I have never used one before. The first time it failed so badly.. so whatever you do, don’t try to use before going somewhere major, like a date or anything like that. Test it out and see what works best for you. The second time I tried out I got it right, I took my time.. on and whatever you do?? Wear the glove!! 😀 And if you do get it, come on back and tell me how it worked out for you ok?

  9. I’m so glad you got it to work!!! Even better, it looks amazing in your hair!

    • Thanks!!! I won’t be able to use very often cause I got one bad shoulder and reaching over my head like that to use it hurts after a while, but it was a blast to finally to it right!!
