Welcome to those who are brand new and those who have been here a while.. I do hope you enjoy our newsletter. Got a new template finally working.. do tell me what you think.. now on to the news of the month!!
Its October and with October comes the month full of pink!
Even we at Overall Beauty have a set of items that we are offering for sale where part of that sale we are donating. But not just for the cure for Breast cancer but to American Cancer society overall. Why you may ask?
The answer for us is pretty simple my mother in law died from the same cancer that Steve Jobs died from. Now we just lost a family friend to the same cancer. We feel that as many cancers that are out there more research and money is needed.

We thought it would be more fun for you to read our newsletter if we talked about other things besides sales etc.. So that is where this idea came from.
Starting new this month we are going to have two sections that are going to be “Did you Know”? And the second section with be “Beauty on Review”.“Did you know?” which is going to be about beauty tips, words that you see often yet have no idea what they mean, why an ingredient is bad or good for you. The second will be possible be beauty based book reviews with a few DIY recipes, ideas about skincare and makeup application. (Got great tips on working with pencil eyeliners as one of them planned for next month)
Now here is our first “Did you know?”
What do you know about an ingredient “Toluene” and why it’s so bad for you and your nails?
Toluene is a solvent added to nail products to help them adhere to your nails and it gives the nail polish its glossy finish.
Now according to the European Union and Proposition 65 (that’s a important piece of legislation from California called “California Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986”) they say Toluene can be toxic to the development of babies and young children. Which is why if you are pregnant you need to stay away from the use of any nail polish that has toluene still listed on the bottle. Just to be on the safe side. Older bottles of most major brands still have it.
The EPA Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics notes that overexposure to Toluene in your nail products may cause irritation to your eyes and nose, weakness, exhaustion, confusion, dizziness, headaches, runny eyes, anxiety, skin rashes to possible liver and kidney damage. Now thanks to pressure by activists leading nail brands have promised to remove Toluene from their nail products. Only there is no pressure or true timeline so who knows how long it’s going to take for the major brands to do it.
What’s cool is many smaller polish brands such as BB Couture, Glitter Gal and Cult Nails or Dazzle Dry never had toluene in their formulas to start with! Many of the newer colors by major brands are now without toluene and if you don’t want it in your nail polishes tell them!
Now I got one more did you know? Starting in January 2012 tanning salons, will not let you tan using tanning beds, spray booths etc if you are 18 or younger. I have a blog post coming soon with more information about that new California law.
Now I’m also asking if you got any beauty questions, ingredients you wonder about, makeup application please send me a email with your questions and they might be answered in future newsletters! shoot me a email to email@example.com with your questions
