I was watching a TV program last night and it was four guys talking about the news over the past year. At the end of the program, the host ask each one, what was their for the coming year. One guy said he didn’t have any resolutions because, and I loved his reason, he didn’t just pick a day to do something new, or make new goals etc. He didn’t see any reason in saying stupid stuff, like he was going to start going to the gym. Why pick a day? When you can do it that day, you could of gone to the gym (as his example) any time in December. It did make great sense. But for those of us who are are not him?
Every year on January 1, millions of people around the globe are using a special word that is big in meaning, small in size, and severely underappreciated. That word is new. We say “Happy New Year,” and we declare our “new” goals for the year, but somewhere along the lines, “new” gets lost in translation.
When you’re ready to embark on a quest to find the new, here are some things to try.
1. Blogging
Writing may not be your X factor, but everyone has a story to tell. In your spare time, try out a blog to document what’s going on in your life. You can make it specific to your interests or your career, or you could keep it wide open for whatever thoughts dance through your mind. Blogging started years ago as a way to share what the family was doing, and for those who were looking for a outlet to write. It was all personal, flash forward to today? Blogging done right is big business, if you do it right it can become a money maker for you on the side. Just research the topics to be sure that its worth doing all the work it takes. 😉
2. Cooking
Cooking gets a bad rap for being time-consuming, messy, and demanding. We may not all be a whiz in the kitchen, but every once and a while, it’s fun to create a big meal for yourself (or your friends and family). Think about it, wouldn’t be fun to finally stop your family from laughing about your cooking and start enjoying the meals? There are places online that will teach you how to cook. YouTube is a great place to start.
3. Dance Lessons
It’s always a good idea to get your body moving when you can, and it’s an even better idea to move your body to music! When you’re itching to do something new, try out a new form of dance. It’s creative and active at the same time – win-win! If you are going to try something new, find a place that offers a variety of dancing styles.
4. Gardening
The best part about having your own garden is eating the food. Pair that with your cooking endeavor, and you’re set! The only caveat with gardening is that you have to have enough space for one. But if you do, it’s well worth it to start growing your own fruits, veggies, and herbs. If you only have a small space like an apartment? You can grow herbs you would use for cooking in small containers. They do not take up too much space, and even if you do not use them for cooking? They can be pretty. You can also grow something like a succulents. They take little space, and can handle if you forget to water them.
5. Hiking
Depending on where you live, mountains may be fully accessible to you. If that’s the case, you should take advantage of it by going on hikes regularly. It gets your blood pumping and gives you all kinds of beautiful sights to see. If you are able to have a place near by that you can hike a few trails? Put away your phone and just be in the moment.
6. Learn a New Language
Spare time should never become wasted time. You know that language you were always dying to learn? Seize this extra time as the perfect opportunity to start practicing. You’ll be a linguist before you know it! If English is your second language? It wouldn’t hurt to learn it better.
7. Meditation
At first glance, meditation may seem like the opposite of exciting. It’s calm, soothing, and super quiet. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be exciting, too! Meditation is an art and a historically backed practice. Try it out for five minutes a day and see how you like it. Meditation would be easier to try if you can’t move that well. Many use meditation as part of their yoga workout.
