Silence in an Empty House – Poem by Kim Snyder

Silence in an Empty House – Poem by Kim Snyder

“Do you love me?” she asks as he runs out the door
Forgetting, once again, to kiss her goodbye~~
“Do you love me?” she asks as he puts on
His jogging shoes to go running with the guys~~
“Do you love me?” He hears as he gets his keys.
He’s late for work, he will tell her later
Again he forgets to kiss her goodbye—

He walks in after work
Dropping his keys by the door,
The sound of his footsteps echoing in a empty house.
The quiet prickles with his sudden fear.
Picking up a note he sees on the floor
He reads—
“I asked you “Do you love me?”
Three times today
I got no answer—–
The silence you must need, I give it to you now.”
His footsteps sound hollow on the floor
Tears well up in his eyes
His heart aches with the pain
she must have felt.
He barely sees her final words…
“Did you ever need me?”

Dropping blindly to his knees ,
His voice shatters the silence…
“I loved you more than you ever knew!
I just didn’t say the words
I just couldn’t say the words
How could you not know?

He loved her in silence and now
The love he had for so long
Has vanished into the silence
She was always just there.
“Did you ever need me?”

Her words ring through his heart and soul
Mingled with the pain he caused by his silence
Denying her those words so simple, yet so powerful:
“I love you”
It was all she had needed to hear.

She had stood outside in the yard looking into the window,
Watching him cry out
his love for her, too late
Breaking his silence.
She turned and walked away
Knowing she won’t be back.
Silence settles again on the house
as if she had never been there at all.
