The Days We All Wore Masks – Poem by Kim Snyder

The Days We All Wore Masks – Poem by Kim Snyder

Leaves falling from trees, in the many shades of golds, browns and red.
Watch as they dance with the wind, moving them around from the park to the street.
To only land so gently in the street,to die under tires of cars driving by.
I look up from watching the leaves dance to their deaths
to watching a yellow school bus driving by, windows filled with children wearing masks,
Their eyes so deeply filled with sadness.
The pain that will never go away, the truth hurting them so deep inside, even now..
Where did the time go?
Is wearing a mask the new norm?
Did we not learn?
Did we not all have the shots?
Even today, years after the scarest days of our lifes, people still wear a mask –
children are growing up afraid of what they do not understand–
Even standing here looking back, even the grown-ups had no clue.
Understanding only one thing, there will be a lost generation of children.
I go back to watching the leaves falling, getting lost in my thoughts.
Life will never be the same again..
